NEW YORK — Writer-director John Hughes, Hollywood's youth impresario of the 1980s and '90s who captured the teen and preteen market with such favorites as "Home Alone," "The Breakfast Club" and "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," died Thursday, a spokeswoman said. He was 59.

Hughes died of a heart attack during a morning walk in Manhattan, Michelle Bega said. He was in New York to visit family.

Jake Bloom, Hughes' longtime attorney, said he was "deeply saddened and in shock" to learn of the director's death.

A native of Lansing, Mich., who later moved to suburban Chicago and set much of his work there, Hughes rose from ad writer to comedy writer to silver screen champ with his affectionate and idealized portraits of teens, whether the romantic and sexual insecurity of "Sixteen Candles," or the J.D. Salinger-esque rebellion against conformity in "The Breakfast Club."

Hughes' ensemble comedies helped make stars out of Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall, Ally Sheedy and many other young performers. He also scripted the phenomenally popular "Home Alone," which made little-known Macaulay Culkin a sensation as the 8-year-old accidentally abandoned by his vacationing family, and wrote or directed such hits as "National Lampoon's Vacation," "Pretty in Pink," "Planes, Trains & Automobiles" and "Uncle Buck."

"I was a fan of both his work and a fan of him as a person," Culkin said. "The world has lost not only a quintessential filmmaker whose influence will be felt for generations, but a great and decent man."

Devin Ratray, best known for playing Culkin's older brother Buzz McCallister in the "Home Alone" films, said he remained close to Hughes over the years.

"He changed my life forever," Ratray said. "Nineteen years later, people from all over the world contact me telling me how much 'Home Alone' meant to them, their families, and their children."

Other actors who got early breaks from Hughes included John Cusack ("Sixteen Candles"), Judd Nelson ("The Breakfast Club"), Steve Carell ("Curly Sue") and Lili Taylor ("She's Having a Baby").

Actor Matthew Broderick worked with Hughes in 1986 when he played the title character in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off."

"I am truly shocked and saddened by the news about my old friend John Hughes. He was a wonderful, very talented guy and my heart goes out to his family," Broderick said.

Ben Stein, who played the monotone economics teacher calling the roll and repeatedly saying "Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?", said Hughes was a towering talent.

"He made a better connection with young people than anyone in Hollywood had ever made before or since," Stein said on Fox Business Network. "It's incredibly sad. He was a wonderful man, a genius, a poet. I don't think anyone has come close to him as being the poet of the youth of America in the postwar period. He was to them what Shakespeare was to the Elizabethan Age.

"You had a regular guy — just an ordinary guy. If you met him, you would never guess he was a big Hollywood power."

As Hughes advanced into middle age, his commercial touch faded and, in Salinger style, he increasingly withdrew from public life. His last directing credit was in 1991, for "Curly Sue," and he wrote just a handful of scripts over the past decade. He was rarely interviewed or photographed.

SEOUL, South Korea - Former President Bill Clinton brought two freed U.S. journalists out of North Korea early Wednesday following rare talks with reclusive leader Kim Jong Il, who pardoned the women sentenced to hard labor for entering the country illegally.

Euna Lee and Laura Ling were heading back to the U.S. with Clinton, his spokesman Matt McKenna said, less than 24 hours after the former U.S. leader landed in the North Korean capital on a private, humanitarian trip to secure their release.

The women, dressed in short-sleeved shirts and jeans, appeared healthy as they climbed the steps to the plane and shook hands with Clinton before getting into the jet, APTN footage in Pyongyang showed. Clinton waved, put his hand over his heart and then saluted.

North Korean officials waved as the plane took off. McKenna said the flight was bound for Los Angeles, where the journalists will be reunited with their families. The White House had no comment.

Michael Jackson died Thursday afternoon (June 25) at the age of 50 after suffering cardiac arrest.

Reports say the legendary pop singer collapsed and suffered cardiac arrest at his home in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Holmby Hills. A doctor present at the time of the incident performed CPR on the singer but could not revive him. He was not breathing and had no pulse when paramedics arrived after a 911 call around 12:26 p.m. PT. They administered CPR and took Jackson via ambulance to UCLA Medical Center but were unable to revive him.

At the hospital, a team of doctors, including emergency physicians and cardiologists, attempted to resuscitate him for more than an hour, but were unsuccessful. According to Jermaine Jackson, the singer's brother, Michael was pronounced dead at 2:26 p.m.

During a brief press conference on Thursday evening, a visibly shaken Jermaine stepped in front of cameras and said, "This is hard."

After describing details about the incident's timeline, Jermaine closed by saying, "Our family requests that the media please respect our privacy during this tough time. And may Allah be with you, Michael, always."

The exact circumstances surrounding Jackson's death continue to remain unclear. Jackson's brother Marlon told CNN that Michael was not feeling well Wednesday night and a doctor was called to the house. Jackson family attorney Brian Oxman speculated to CNN that the singer's death might be related to the abuse of prescription medication.

Los Angeles Police Department robbery/homicide detectives have begun an investigation into the death, though there is no evidence of criminal wrongdoing. Detectives will interview relatives, friends and Jackson's doctors. The L.A. County coroner's office will conduct an autopsy Friday.

From his early career in the 1970s with his family group the Jackson 5 to his decades-long career as a solo artist, Jackson stood as one of the most successful and beloved pop artists of all time, selling more than 750 million albums worldwide. He won 13 Grammy Awards.




	Michael Jackson: A Life In Photos

The Jackson 5's first single, 1969's "I Want You Back," hit #1 on the Billboard charts, and the Motown group went on to become one of the most popular acts during the '70s with hit singles like "ABC," "I'll Be There" and "The Love You Save."

In 1978, Jackson joined Diana Ross in the big-screen musical "The Wiz," an adaptation of the Broadway musical based on "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz." His career as a solo artist took off with 1982's Thriller, which stands as the biggest-selling album of all time. Over the course of his career, with hit albums like Bad and Dangerous, Jackson scored five #1 Billboard 200 albums and seven #1 Billboard Hot 100 singles.

But Jackson's career faltered as he suffered several scandalous legal battles. In 1994, he settled a civil suit stemming from child-molestation accusations. In 2005, he was acquitted on 10 felony counts in a child-molestation trial brought against him, including four counts of lewd acts on a child under 14 and four counts of administering alcohol to enable child molestation.

Still, he released a greatest-hits album in 1995, which hit #1 on the Billboard chart, and embarked on a hugely successful world tour. His 2001 album, Invincible, also reached the top Billboard slot; it would prove to be his final studio album.

At the time of his death, Jackson was gearing up for a comeback, rehearsing for a series of 50 sold-out shows in London's O2 arena that would jump-start a world tour, a new album and possibly a movie. In what is believed to be his final public appearance, Jackson showed up at a press conference in London wearing one of his signature quasi-military outfits and announced the initial plan for the concerts. Describing the shows as a "final curtain call," Jackson told the assembled crowd of fans and media, "This is it. This is it! I just want to say these will be my final shows, performances in London. ... When I say this is it, it really means this is it."

Jackson eventually postponed by several days the July start of the O2 shows, raising questions about his health. But after his death, a source close to Jackson told MTV News, "Michael has been in rehearsals. He's been in good spirits. He's been rehearsing eight hours a day for the London concerts."

On June 9, TMZ caught Jackson sitting in a black SUV. Asked if could still do the moonwalk, his signature dance move, Jackson replied, "Why wouldn't I be able to?"

Born on August 29, 1958, in Gary, Indiana, Jackson was the seventh of nine children. He married Lisa Marie Presley — Elvis' only child — in 1994, but they divorced in 1996. The same year, Jackson married Debbie Rowe and had two children before splitting in 1999.

The singer is survived by three children: Michael Joseph Jackson Jr., Paris Michael Katherine Jackson and Prince "Blanket" Michael Jackson II.

PHOENIX (AP)—The 4-year-old daughter of boxer Mike Tyson died at a hospital Tuesday, a day her neck apparently got caught in a treadmill cord at her Phoenix home, police said.

Exodus Tyson was pronounced dead just before noon, police Sgt. Andy Hill said. She had been on life support and police have said their investigation showed her injury on Monday was a “tragic accident.”

“There are no words to describe the tragic loss of our beloved Exodus,” the family said in a statement. “We ask you now to please respect our need at this very difficult time for privacy to grieve and try to help each other heal.”

Police said Exodus either slipped or put her head in the loop of a cord hanging under the console. Her 7-year-old brother found her and told their mother. She took Exodus off the cord, called 911 and tried to revive her.

Responding officers and firefighters performed CPR as they took the girl to the hospital.

Former heavyweight champion Tyson was in Las Vegas at the time of the accident and flew Monday to Phoenix, where he was seen entering the hospital.

Tyson spokeswoman Cynthia Schwartz said the family had not arranged a funeral yet and would release a statement later.

Atlanta based up and coming rapper Dolla was shot and killed yesterday at about 3pm immediately following an altercation outside of the Beverly Center Mall in Los Angeles.

LOS ANGELES — Rapper Dolla was fatally shot near a valet stand outside a mall after a dispute with another man Monday afternoon, his publicist said.

Dolla, whose real name is Roderick Anthony Burton II, was shot in the head at the Beverly Center near West Hollywood and Beverly Hills, publicist Sue Vannasing told the Los Angeles Times. Police and coroner's officials have not confirmed the victim's identity.

An armed man was detained at the Los Angeles International Airport for questioning two hours after the shooting, police said.

Vannasing said Burton and another rapper, D.J. Shabbazz, were waiting at the valet stand after a shopping trip when a gunman opened fire on the Atlanta-based rapper.

Police Officer Karen Reyner said the victim and the gunman had been arguing before the gunman attacked and fled in a silver Mercedes-Benz.

Burton worked on the soundtrack for the 2006 dance film "Step Up" and recently released two singles with the singer Akon: "Like This" and "She So Fine."

Though it probably spread a bit of joy among T.I.'s fans, recent reports that the rapper will only serve two months of his one year and a day prison sentence are inaccurate.

The Associated Press reported on Sunday that T.I. — due to report to the Forrest City low-security federal prison in Little Rock, Arkansas, on May 26 — had been given credit for 305 days of home detention, "so his stay at Forrest City prison will likely be only two months," the news agency may have misread the sentencing report. The story has since spread on the Internet, but according to Charysse Alexander, a spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Georgia, it is not accurate.

According to Alexander, the rapper was indeed given credit for the 305 days of home confinement he served while awaiting trial in the case, but that has nothing to do with his prison sentence.

After pleading guilty to two charges of illegally possessing firearms and of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm in March in connection with his attempt in October 2007 to buy unlicensed machine guns and silencers, T.I. (real name: Clifford Harris Jr.) was ordered to serve one year and one day in federal prison. Alexander explained that, at best, according to federal sentencing guidelines, anyone who serves more than one year in prison is eligible for a 15 percent "good time" credit, which in Tip's case could shave almost 55 days off his sentence.

The confusion may have stemmed from mixing the credit for home confinement with the prison sentence, which are separate terms, Alexander said. Once T.I. completes the prison term, he will still have to serve out the remainder of his home confinement, she said, which will amount to about two months.

The crimes T.I. was accused of would typically have landed him in prison for five or more years, but due to the plea deal worked out with prosecutors, he was able to receive a reduced sentence provided he performed more than 1,000 hours of community service over the last year, speaking to kids about the pitfalls of drugs, crime and gangs.

T.I.'s forthcoming prison sentence, of course, was the subject of MTV's recent "T.I.'s Road to Redemption" series.

While MTV News was unable to reach officials at Forrest City for comment by press time, the AP quoted that facility's spokesperson as saying that T.I. will join 1,500 other inmates at the low-security prison and likely be treated like any other prisoner.

"Unless there are custody or security concerns, all incoming inmates are placed in general population," R.D. Weeks reportedly told the AP. He added that each cell is double-bunked, so T.I. will have a cellmate and he will have access to the recreation yard, counseling and any of the facility's 14 religious groups.

Rapper T.I., who was sentenced to one year and a day behind bars on federal weapons charges last month, has booted fellow rapper Alfamega from his Grand Hustle Records following a published report by SmokingGun.com earlier this week that claims the latter was an informant for the drug enforcement administration during a trial on a heroin trafficker. "Even though all our artists and employees are asked by us to be honest and open about their past history, at no time did Alfa disclose to me or Grand Hustle what has now appeared in the media," T.I., born Clifford Harris, said during an interview on Atlanta’s 107.9 radio station. "He essentially deceived us by failing to fully disclose the truth about his past, and there is no place in our organization for dishonest and misleading behavior. As I have always said, you must take responsibility for your own actions. We at Grand Hustle can not support or condone the blaming of others for our own mistakes. I hope and pray to God, bless his savings plans, but I don't foresee me or my company playing a role in his personal or professional business." T.I. pleaded guilty last March after he was arrested in 2007, attempting to buy unregistered machine guns and silencers. Wow, Is the Hip Hop Industry ready for a another "Snitch"..? It is said that evidence has surfaced that reveals that Grand Hustle recording Artist Alfamega cooperated with the DEA in 1995 as an informant and tesified against a known heroin dealer and several other criminals to shorten his sentence.

The Smoking Gun continues its efforts to discredit rappers’ reputations. In an article posted on the site today, TSG revealed that hulking Grand Hustle recording artist, Alfamega, was a former informant for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and a government witness.

According to the site, the Grand Hustle Muscle, copped a deal with the government in order to shorten his 1995 jail bid in on federal gun charges. TSG obtained legal documents showing that the Atlanta rapper, born Cedric Zellars, testified against a known heroin dealer as well as several other criminals to have 18 months subtracted from his 110 month sentence.

As of press time Mega has not responded to the TSG report.

Alfamega was recently in the news after he was arrested for getting into a fight with Shawty Lo’s camp during last year’s Dirty Awards in November. Having to be restrained by several police officers, he was eventually escorted out of the event handcuffed and pepper-sprayed.

The hip hop couple call it quits UPDATE: A look at the divorce papers

One of hip hop’s most talked about married couples have split. VIBE has confirmed that Nas and Kelis are headed for a divorce. “I can confirm that she has filed for divorce,” a spokesperson for Kelis told VIBE. “We request the media to respect her privacy during this very difficult time.” At around 3:45pm PST, high-powered attorney Laura Wasser (who has also represented Britney Spears, Angelina Jolie, and Stevie Wonder) filed a divorce petition today on behalf of Kelis, citing irreconciable differences. The bombshell comes amid recent reports that the acclaimed rhymer and influential R&B vixen were expecting their first child together—a son. Kelis is currently seven months pregnant.

It was only last February when Nas spoke excitedly to MTV about the prospect of having a baby with Kelis. “Yeah, man, I find out what it's gonna be next week, so I'm happy," said the multiplatinum rapper, who also has a 15-year-old daughter from a previous relationship.

Nas and Kelis first met in 2002 at a MTV Video Music Awards afterparty thrown by hip hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs. “I wasn’t going to go, but I’m glad I did,” Nas told VIBE in June 2003. “Then at the afterparty, I met my girl.” Kelis remembered the meeting with her future husband vividly: “Everyone moves out of the way, and Nas stands up, and I put my hand out, and I’m like, Hey, I’m Kelis. And he goes, ‘Who?’… So I’m crawling into a fucking hole, and he’s like, ‘Wait-huh? What’s your name? And I’m like, Kelis, and he’s like, ‘Oh, well that’s great, because I’ve been waiting to make you my wife all these years.’” When Nas told her of his bold marital plans, she replied in typical Kelis form. “That’s great, because that’s all I wanna be.”

After dating for two years, the pair married in a small ceremony in Atlanta on July 28, 2003. Their relationship even sparked artistic collaborations, with Nas appearing on Kelis’ sensual single "In Public," featured on her 2003 release Tasty (Star Trak/Arista). Kelis returned the favor on the Queensbridge, N.Y., MC’s controversial 2006 work Hip Hop Is Dead (Def Jam) on “Not Going Back.” Yet, since March of 2008, rumors of the couple separating have been circulating on the Web. Nas’ spokesperson could not be reached for comment.

It is said that Jimmy was scheduled to perform at Club Esko in "The D" but wasn't able to make it on stage after being involved in the brawl.
